Lowering Your Risks for a Dental Emergency

Dental emergencies are not exclusive to children at play. They happen to people of all ages. Toothaches, broken crowns, and more can lead to a dental emergency visit. Below, we share ways to help prevent them.

Brush and Floss

Adopting and implementing an excellent oral care routine is integral to oral infection prevention. Deep tooth infections are among the most common dental emergencies.

See the Dentist

Lack of appropriate dental care is another common reason for tooth infections and advanced tooth decay. Stay current with your dental care by visiting your Vancouver dentist regularly.

Protect Teeth

If you play rough or ball-oriented sports, protecting your teeth with a custom mouthguard is crucial. Also, always wear the recommended face gear or face protection during play.

You may need emergency dental care if you are suffering the following: loss of a tooth, a crack or fracture to a tooth, loose teeth, serious mouth infection or dental abscess, severe pain, swelling or bleeding that develops soon after a dental procedure, and loss of a filling or crown.

Contact Our East Vancouver Dental Office

Call the office right away to schedule your appointments, and make a note of which tooth is hurting, how long it has been hurting, and how the tooth reacts to cold or hot foods or drinks or to pressure. The more details you provide, the better we can assist you.

A chipped tooth can be painful and harmful to your oral health. An untreated chipped or broken tooth can lead to nerve exposure or damage, sensitivity, and cuts on your tongue or lips. It's also more vulnerable to tooth decay and infection, which can spread throughout the tooth or mouth and even result in losing a tooth if not promptly treated.

If you have a chipped tooth, please contact your emergency dentist Dr. Jason Liu at Alta Dental. Dr. Liu can relieve your pain, repair your tooth, and provide personalized, comprehensive treatment.

In the meantime, we recommend:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories as directed.
  • Cover the tooth's sharp or jagged edges with sugarless chewing gum or dental wax to prevent cutting your lips, inside of your cheeks, or tongue.
  • Only eat soft foods and avoid biting down on the tooth.

Restorative Dentistry in Vancouver, BC

Treatment for broken, fractured, or chipped teeth depends on the severity of the damage and location in the mouth. Our dental team can provide you with the thorough and prompt treatment you need to restore your smile's function, comfort, and aesthetics. Some treatments for damaged teeth include dental fillings, bonding, crowns, veneers, and root canal therapy.

If you have a chipped or broken tooth, we invite you to contact our Vancouver dental clinic at your earliest convenience.

Steps to Take in a Dental Emergency

There are many types of emergencies, and some are more critical than others like severe pain or a dental abscess. It can be difficult to think clearly when you’re in pain, so it’s a good idea to have a general idea of what steps to take in different situations. Here’s what to do based on the most common dental emergencies:

1. Toothache

  • Try rinsing your mouth with warm water.
  • Floss gently between your teeth to dislodge any food.
  • To relieve pain and swelling, try over-the-counter pain relievers.
  • Apply a cold compress on and off your face for 20-minute intervals to also help with swelling and pain.

Toothaches don’t go away on their own and will get worse if you don’t seek treatment, so please call our East Vancouver office right away.

2. Dental Abscess

When the nerve in your tooth is infected between the tooth and the gums, we call it an abscess. Abscesses are usually very painful, and you will usually first notice a pimple on the gum line.

  • To reduce pain, try rinsing your mouth with warm salt water several times every day.
  • Seek professional treatment immediately, as untreated abscesses can spread quickly

3. Chipped or Broken Tooth

  • Gather any tooth fragments
  • Rinse both your mouth and the broken pieces with warm water.
  • Reduce pain and swelling by applying a cold compress.

4. Knocked-Out Tooth

This is a critical dental emergency that requires immediate treatment.

  • Retrieve the tooth, hold it by the crown, and rinse it with warm water.
  • Do not scrub or otherwise disturb the root or any tissue that is attached.
  • Place the tooth in a cup of milk, water, or saliva, and bring it with you to our office.

Knocked-out teeth are most likely to be saved within the first hour, so it is critical that you call us or go to the nearest emergency centre if we’re not immediately available.
