What should I do for a chipped tooth?

A chipped tooth can be painful and harmful to your oral health. An untreated chipped or broken tooth can lead to nerve exposure or damage, sensitivity, and cuts on your tongue or lips. It's also more vulnerable to tooth decay and infection, which can spread throughout the tooth or mouth and even result in losing a tooth if not promptly treated.

If you have a chipped tooth, please contact your emergency dentist Dr. Jason Liu at Alta Dental. Dr. Liu can relieve your pain, repair your tooth, and provide personalized, comprehensive treatment.

In the meantime, we recommend:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories as directed.
  • Cover the tooth's sharp or jagged edges with sugarless chewing gum or dental wax to prevent cutting your lips, inside of your cheeks, or tongue.
  • Only eat soft foods and avoid biting down on the tooth.
