Root Canals in Vancouver BC

A woman experiencing tooth painDecades ago, if a tooth was severely damaged by disease or injury, it was usually removed. Fortunately, today we can perform root canal treatment to save a tooth that we might otherwise need to extract.

At Alta Dental Studio, we know that even the thought of a root canal can cause anxiety that makes you want to forgo treatment. Our team understands these feelings, and we want you to know that our goal is to provide all the care and compassion you need to feel comfortable.

However, you should also know that in recent years we have seen incredible advances in dental technology and techniques that make having a root canal no more complicated than having a tooth filled. And in spite of what you have heard, root canals don’t cause pain; they relieve it.

Symptoms of an Infected Root Canal

Several symptoms indicate that a root canal may be needed:

  • Severe pain, especially when pressure is applied to the tooth
  • Tenderness or swelling of nearby gums
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Darkening or discolouration of the tooth
  • A pimple on your gums

Why You Need a Root Canal

Deep inside your tooth is soft tissue called pulp that contains blood vessels and nerves that keep your tooth healthy. There are several ways that bacteria can enter the pulp and cause an infection including a deep cavity or filling, a crack or chip in a tooth, or dental trauma.

When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, it causes pain that worsens over time, and we need to perform a root canal to remove it. Even if you aren’t in pain, bacteria continue to damage the bone and supporting structures that hold the tooth in place. If we don’t treat the infection, the only option will be to remove the tooth.

Don't Delay Root Canal Treatment

Here are a few reasons why it's essential to seek treatment promptly if you're experiencing dental pain and the benefits of root canal treatment.

Alleviates Infection

Root canal treatment alleviates the infection that's damaging your tooth and causing discomfort.

Guards Tooth Structure

A root canal protects your natural tooth structure, saving you from tooth extraction and replacement.

Eliminates Discomfort

Root canal treatment stops the pain and discomfort caused by your festering tooth infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Alta Dental Studio, you will receive detailed post-operation instructions and home-care guidelines after root canal treatments. It’s also important to carefully follow the instructions for medications if prescribed. Some tenderness and soreness in the area of treatment after procedures are normal. In situations where the crown of the tooth is heavily damaged or decayed, a root canal treatment may include rebuilding the tooth interior with composite and a crown to restore it to optimal appearance and function.

After your procedure, you should wait until the numbness in your mouth wears off before eating. Don’t chew or bite down on the treated tooth until it is fully restored by your dentist. Take care of your teeth by brushing, flossing, regular checkups and cleanings to maintain your teeth for lifetime.

You may need root canal when the nerve or pulp of the tooth becomes infected and inflamed due to dental decay, a cracked or broken tooth, or an injury to the tooth. The most common symptoms are mild to severe toothache, with teeth sensitivity to pressure, hot or cold foods or drinks. The purpose of the treatment is to completely remove the infected nerve and pulp and, seal up the tooth, and restore it to natural function.

The Root Canal Procedure

Infected tooth pulpMany people are fearful about root canals because they don’t know what’s involved. The process is straightforward, and we can typically complete it in one or two visits to our office.

  1. We use a local anesthetic to numb the area completely before we begin
  2. We gently and thoroughly remove the damaged pulp from your tooth
  3. The area inside your tooth will be disinfected to get rid of any remaining bacteria
  4. We place a temporary filling to prevent reinfection of the root canals
  5. In two weeks, we remove the temporary filling and protect the tooth with a crown

With proper hygiene and routine dental exams and cleanings, a tooth that has had a root canal should give you many years of service.
