What Is a Dental Veneer?

Much like a veneer on furniture, dental veneers create a new surface that conceals what’s beneath it. We commonly use veneers to fix aesthetic issues like:

• A wide gap between upper front teeth
• Crooked or misshapen teeth
• Severely stained teeth that resist whitening

Both treatments have the effect of improving your smile but go about the process in very different ways:

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are customized shells of tooth-shaped porcelain that are fabricated at an outside lab, then bonded to your teeth at our Vancouver dental office. The process typically takes place over two or three appointments.

Choosing porcelain veneers has several benefits: 

• They closely resemble dental enamel – Porcelain has a translucent appearance that is similar to dental enamel, so they blend seamlessly with your smile.
• They’re durable and long-lasting – Porcelain veneers can last as long as ten years with proper care.
• They resist staining – The smooth, glass-like finish of porcelain veneers helps resist staining.

Since the procedure for placing a veneer involves altering the contours of your natural tooth, the process cannot be undone.

Composite Bonding

With this approach, our doctors use tooth-coloured composite filling material that they bond to the surface of a tooth to improve its shape, size, or colour. The benefits composite veneers offer are:

• We don’t have to remove as much dental enamel as we do with veneers
• Since we can usually place composites in just one appointment, they’re generally less expensive than porcelain veneers.
• They are not as durable as porcelain veneers, but they are easy to repair if they get damaged

If your teeth and gums are healthy, you are a good candidate for veneers. However, if you have decay or periodontal disease, they must be treated before we can place veneers. Teeth grinding or bruxism damage veneers, so we need to address this problem first.
