Dental implants are widely considered to be the gold standard for tooth replacement because of the strength, function, and beauty they provide. If you are one of the millions who have missing teeth, and you’d like to be able to eat and smile again, dental implants may be the option you’ve been looking for.
Dental implants were first used in 1965, but did you know that the dental implant concept is as many as 4,000 years old? So, what is the history of dental implants that has led to them becoming the most popular tooth replacement option available today?
The History of Dental Implants
The idea of implanting something into a person’s jaw to replace their missing teeth has been practiced for thousands of years; there are many examples of different ways that ancient people used their own form of implants, including the following:
- Nearly 4,000 years ago in ancient China, it is believed that people used bamboo pegs to replace their missing teeth.
- The remains of an ancient Egyptian king revealed a copper peg inserted into his jaw as a tooth replacement. This implant is believed to have been placed after the king’s death.
- A false tooth was found in a 2,300-year-old French grave. Again, it is believed to have been placed after death since it would have been an extremely painful process.
- In 1931, archaeologists found three tooth-shaped shells implanted into the lower jaw of an ancient Mayan.
- In 1952, an orthopedic surgeon discovered that titanium was the material that would successfully fuse with human bone, and the modern dental implant was born.
