Wisdom teeth are the third molars to arrive in the back of your mouth. They typically appear between ages 18 and 25, but not everyone has them.
Our dentists recommend extracting wisdom teeth for several reasons:
- Crowding — Some people don't have enough space in their mouths for wisdom teeth. If this is the case, the wisdom teeth could crowd the other teeth, causing shifting and misalignment of teeth or the bite.
- Cleanliness — Wisdom teeth are hard to brush and floss because they are located at the back of the mouth. If you can't keep your wisdom teeth clean and free of plaque buildup, you are more susceptible to developing problems like gum disease and cavities.
- Impaction — Some wisdom teeth remain impacted (stuck beneath the gumline). This can result in an infection.
- Eruption — Some wisdom teeth erupt, or come into your mouth at weird angles, which could damage neighbouring teeth.
