Choosing the Right Toothpaste for Your Needs

When you visit the drugstore, there are so many varieties of toothpaste that it’s hard to know which one is best for you.

Your Vancouver dentist strongly recommends a toothpaste that is 1,000 parts per million fluoride or a product that carries the Canadian Dental Association’s seal of approval.

From there, it’s all a matter of personal preference.

Do Specialty Toothpastes Work?

Once you’ve chosen a toothpaste with the seal of approval, you may want to specialize your choice further. For example, you may prefer a cinnamon flavoured paste over the more popular minty variety.

Maybe you have sensitive teeth or simply feel more refreshed with a specific brand compared with another.

Let’s look at a few specialty toothpaste types and discuss whether they work as claimed.

Whitening Toothpaste

Whitening toothpaste may work to eliminate minor stains, but it’s a gamble. In some cases, especially with prolonged use, you may develop tooth sensitivity. So we recommend checking with your dentist to make sure the product is safe for your teeth. And it’s important to remember that whitening will not lighten your restorations.

Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth

In some cases, over-the-counter toothpaste designed to reduce tooth sensitivity can work. However, it’s important to check with your dentist if you have prolonged or increasing sensitivity. This can mean a cavity or other oral health issue that requires treatment.

Brushing and Flossing Tips

It would be best to brush and floss your teeth at least twice daily or after every meal. Additionally, it would be best if you were spending time on each tooth, cleaning all surfaces. And always use a fresh length of floss for each go-through.

Along with brushing and flossing, you should visit your dentist for exams and teeth cleanings in Vancouver. We recommend twice per year, but your dentist may customize your schedule if you have an oral health condition.
